Introduction

My name is Mary Katherine and I am a student in the middle of a journey that began a very long time ago. My educational path has changed many times over the years but so have I. Through my learning path I have found out more about who I am and what motivates me. I have learned that my desire is to help others and I have a passion for learning.

I began this educational journey in 1989 when I became a student at South Piedmont Community College.  My original plan was to be an accountant, then a nurse, and then a teacher. A lot has happened along the way from working as a bank teller, teacher assistant, and office manager to raising three children and volunteering at their school and working with a non-profit organization.  Each position I held had its own challenges and opportunities for growth. I found what I enjoy doing and what I am good at, as well as, what did not work so well for me.

I am now close to finishing the degree I began so many years ago. The degree focus has changed many times and does not look anything like I thought it would when I began. Although my path has had many turns, I believe I am finally right where I am supposed to be.

For the past two years, I have been dedicated to not only earning my Associates of Arts degree but also doing it while maintaining my 3.6 GPA.   My goal now is to transfer to a four-year university and continue my education. With a bachelor's degree I will be well-poised to pursue a career in college admissions or work in non-profit leadership.

I enjoy working with people and helping them become who they desire to be. I work at a local dance studio and am able to guide and advise young people and adults as they navigate the dance world. I also work in the Academic Support Center at SPCC as a tutor. As a tutor I have the privilege of assisting students in their academic pursuits.

As a student I have found that I am a visual learner. I need to see things demonstrated before I can process the information completely. I also learn best by putting into practice what I have recently learned. This cycle of observing and putting into action has served me well in many areas. I am an eager student, ready to take on any challenge presented to me. I am devoted to continuing to learn and diligent in my pursuit of knowledge. I look forward to continuing this educational journey and am eager to see where it takes me and how it transforms my life along the way.
